We continue to flesh out the sources of clergy frustration.  This is really must-read material for church leadership in a local congregation:

7. You don’t have enough time for your family.

Although the Word is VERY CLEAR that a pastor must be a good husband and father, giving priority to the physical, emotional, and spiritual health of your spouse and children; too many churches push back at even earned vacation time, believe being at the hospital or a church meeting should always have priority over family dinner time, your children’s concerts and ballgames, and date night with your spouse.

8. Your church does not support your need for rest–both spiritual and physical.

Sabbath? What’s that?  You went to the golf course?  How unspiritual of you.  You actually took an entire day off and turned off the phone?  We NEED you on demand even if you have worked 72 hours this week because of church and parishioner emergencies.


9. Your compensation is inadequate.

You must live pay check to pay check.  You haven’t had a raise in years.  You cannot provide your family with what they need but the church will spend thousands on a new organ.


10. Your church prefers cultural Christianity to the Bible.

Your church thinks that a certain political party is synonymous with Christianity. Or you get messages like this. “Don’t preach about the poor or the alien, pastor.”  “I know what the Bible says , but.”  “That discipleship stuff is not for the average Christian.”  “Pastor, we know what the Bible says, but in real life it’s just not practical.”  “Good people go to heaven.”

11.  Your church expects you to be perfect.

Which is tough.  They believe that they are not perfect, but forgiven–but don’t you ever have a bad day.

12.  Your church values doing over being

Yes, they want you to be Christ-like but their definition is all about “getting the work done.”
